Angela Farnan has been a nurse for 30 years. She has cared for many tiny and sick babies on a pediatric intensive care unit.
While working at the OSF Children’s Hospital, in Illinois, a baby boy came into her care that changed her life forever.
Blaze was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. At just three days old his tiny body had to undergo surgery.
Months later he had to have his second surgery. Angela stayed by his side throughout it all.
Angela was one of the nurses who took care of Blaze but the more time she spent with the sweet baby, the more she fell in love with him.
Angela said Blake’s biological family lived far away from the hospital and was struggling financially, finding it difficult to travel back and forth to visit him and to afford his medical needs.
Nurse Angela took Blaze into her care and had short-term guardianship, with permission from his parents.
After his second surgery, Blaze’s birth mother had a heart-wrenching request for Angela.
The family wanted Angela to adopt their son.
“It was quite an emotional day because my husband and I fell in love with him and it was getting closer and closer to when we had to give him back,” Angela said, according to Good Morning America.
For Mission Partners in the PICU and NICU at OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois, every child they treat is family. So…
“[Blaze’s mom] said she and her husband were discussing us keeping Blaze on a permanent basis,” added Angela.
“She was crying and said, ‘I just don’t want anyone to feel like I’m a bad mom.’ I said she just made the best decision as a mom and there was no question that she loves Blaze.”
Now, Farnan and her husband, Rick, are proud parents to Blaze. The couple are so in love with their new baby boy who they say has the sweetest personality.
‘Best days of our lives’
“Becoming a parent for the first time, I can’t describe the feeling,” Angela said. “It was one of the best days of our lives.”

This couple waited so long for a child of their own, it seems that Blaze was meant to be with them.
It must have been such a tough decision for his biological parents to give him up but I’m so glad angel Angela was there to love and cherish this sweet baby boy.
