People became aware of the presence of fluoride in the public water supplies due to the government policies, and they have become growingly worried about its effects on our health.
While some focus on its ability to prevent tooth decay, more are concerned about the serious adverse effects on the nervous system if taken in high amounts.
However, what is a fact is that even the smallest sip of water exposes us to fluoride, and this definitely has some effects on our health.
One of the most common side effects of the exposure of fluoride is fluorosis, which is a permanent deformation of the teeth, mostly caused in children during the 8th year of their life.
Fluorosis causes physical deformities, including irregularities in the surface of the teeth, staining, ranging from yellow to dark brown, and big, noticeable pits that cause holes in the teeth.
The exposure to fluoride also leads to problems with the cognitive development in children.
A Chinese study has shown that children who grew up in areas with high levels of fluoride in their drinking water scored, on average, considerably less on IQ tests in comparison to those who have lived in lower-fluoride areas.
The senior study author Philippe Grandjean claims that the reason for this is the toxic effects of fluoride on the developing brain.
“Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain. The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.”
